For this session, details of the exact positions of each candidate during the reception of each Sacrament are discussed. A list of what happens and the cues for the next moves are outlined. The positions of the Godparents, Sponsors and Families are also included. A sketch of the Sanctuary and details pertaining to positions is also given.
Blessed are you,
Lord our God, Who has given to each of us A personal destiny and purpose in life. We thank You, God of Mysterious Ways, that You have a holy design for each of us. We rejoice that we are, each of us, special to You, that our names are written in the palm of Your hand and our place in history, our purpose for existing, is known within Your heart, since endless ages. We are grateful for that long line of holy people, who since ancient times have inspired others by their faithfulness to their own special destiny. They, by their very lives, shout out to us not to compromise our destinies, but to live fully within Your eternal design. Blessed are You, Inscrutable Lord, for those events, persons, talents and loves which have helped us to discover adventure and purpose, fruitfulness and meaning, in our sometimes empty and seemingly insignificant lives. Blessed are You for teachers, parents and other guides who call us out from the cocoon of comfort and contentment to embark upon that unique path which You have set forth for each of Your sons and daughters. Blessed are You, Lord our God, who has given to each of us a personal destiny and purpose in life. Amen
Father in heaven,
the love of your Son led him to accept the suffering of the cross that we might glory in new life. Change our selfishness into self-giving. Help us to embrace the world you have given us, that we may transform the darkness of its pain into the life and joy you promise. Grant this through Christ our Lord.
The Opening Prayer, The Fifth Sunday of Lent.
POSITIONS FOR RECEPTION OF RITES OF INITIATION.
1. Right after the Homily CUE Candidates are called for Baptism BY NAME to form a line facing the Altar from in front of the Lectern to the Tabernacle. Please keep the area in front of the Font clear. Godparents stand behind them. They remain there for the Blessing of the Water. Father asks Questions and Candidates answer “I do”
2. Celebrant helped by Deacon, Anoints Hands and Throat of the Elect starting from the Tabernacle side. Father continues asking questions with Elect answering “I do”
3. As each one is called by name, CUE, the Candidate to be Baptized goes up near the Font with his/her Godparents. At this time, Family members are encouraged to join them behind the font. Everyone in the group is facing the Font except the Candidate who is facing the Congregation. Candidate leans head sideways over the font and is Baptized.
4. As each is finished being Baptized each returns with Godparents to one’s place in front of the altar at the nave level. Family go back to the Pews.
5. When all are ready, they are given the white gown which they put on helped by their Godparents. All say “Amen” at the end of Celebrant’s prayers.
6. When called, CUE, Godparents fetch the lighted candle from the Deacon. All say “Amen” at the end of Celebrant’s prayers.
7. Celebrant goes down the main aisle blessing the congregation with Holy Water and returns to the altar facing the congregation, saying a Prayer. We answer “Amen” CUE All Godparents go back to the Pews. Candles are put out.
8. Candidates called for Confirmation BY NAME join those just Baptized. Sponsors come out from the pews and stand behind their Candidates. Always answer “Amen” after end of each of Celebrant’s prayers.
9. Anointing starts as before from the Tabernacle side. Before each Candidate is Anointed, Sponsor calls Candidate’s First Name and places Right Hand on Candidate’s Right Shoulder during the Anointing.
10. After all are Confirmed, everyone is given the candle back.
11. Celebrant calls for Candles to be re-lit. Everyone answers “I do” to Celebrant’s questions. When the Promises are finished, everyone goes back to the pews.
12. For Communion the Candidates go first then the Godparents, Sponsors and Families.
The Consecrated Bread is received first and then the Optional Consecrated Wine. Candidates, Godparents, Sponsors and Families MAY receive in both species, saying “Amen” right before each reception.
The above sketch can give one a better idea of the positions. It could be adapted to any location. In our case, the Tabernacle is on the right side of the Altar out of the picture.
